Choosing a Location

Pricing includes a location within Western Union County, NC/South Charlotte.  It does not have to be somewhere exotic, even your own backyard or front porch will do.  Maybe select somewhere meaningful to you or your year.  Did you just finish a home remodel?  Show it off.  Buy the convertiable you always wanted?  Make it fun - put everyone in the car parked on a nice street!  Bought a boat? Favorite park?  If you would like to use a location on private property, you will need to get express permission in writing (ahead of time) to use it.  If the area is not in shade then scheduling an early morning or late afternoon photo session will ensure more flattering photos.  If it is your home and you want to show it off, note the time of day when the house gets the best lighting (it is not in shadow) before you call to book an appointment.  I have some favorite spots myself if you don't have any ideas.  Also, if you have little ones, keep in mind that you want to schedule a time when they will be happy and cooperative.  If there is water involved, bring extra clothes just in case!

What to Wear?

The key to what to wear is "keep it simple". You want the faces to be the focus, not the fashion!  Neutrals are always good.  Coordinate with the other family members so one person does not "pop" out.  That does not mean you have to look like clones or that you just escaped from a prep school.  Are you the casual type (jeans or jean skirts and dresses) or the dress-up type?  Think about the setting.  You can either harmonize with the environment or contrast (light vs. dark).  Just don't clash!   Forget fussy stripes, plaids, or large patterns. Keep it classic unless you want to get a good laugh from the photo 20 years ago (remember your Dad in that late 60's flower shirt).  If you are doing a holiday shoot and want to use strong colors like red, keep it to the richer tones and the outfits simple and solid colored.  Remember you want your darlings to be the stars not their outfit. Everyone does not have to be in the same color - if you do pastels, then pale pink, pale blue, pale yellow and white will harmonize - it is okay to mix it up but try to keep the bottoms coordinated (lights or darks).   Also the day before is not the time to try a new hairdo or new hair color - usually a haircut about 2 weeks before the photoshoot is best as it allows the hair to grow in more naturally.  When you call to book an appointment, I would be glad to discuss clothing choices with you.   Organize the clothing ahead and have everyone try it on.  It will save you show up all stressed and sweating!

Why does professional photography seem so costly?

First of all, as in every profession, there is a lot of time spent learning!  Classes, reading, experimenting.  You are not just paying for the time you spend with a professional photographer, you are paying for their experience.  Plus with digital photography, the computer is a digital darkroom.  After a shoot is over, the photographer spends timing at the computer adjusting, cropping, enhancing and uploading images. Shooting on location means unpredictable lighting & more time in the digital darkroom!   A lot of this work used to be done by the lab, but now it is done by the responsibility of the photographer.  Next, professional photography equipment is expensive.  Cameras, lenses, lighting and with digital photography, powerful computers, digital  file storage and software are required and not only are expensive but need upgrading.  Some places offer very inexpensive portraits, but chances are they will not be very creative.  A good portrait photographer is not only a good technician, they also are an artist who looks for something unique - a personality, a story, a family dynamic and captures that in an image.  I work with you and your children to create fun portraits and a pleasant experience for the children that you often don't get in those portrait "mills".

A fine work of art is valuable & something you will enjoy forever!
